we need to make space for our doubts (liturgy)

night

We need space for doubts. Community life must not perpetuate the false stories of certainty that we like to tell each other.  Just as we pray and sing words of hope–we need to make room for our struggles.

Several weeks ago Convergence began processing the value of doubt in our life.  We believe that there is transformation inherent in facing our doubts AND in sharing our doubts in community.  As we shared our struggles–we wanted to take cues from Peter Rollins in his challenge to create space for doubts–a voice for our doubts.  We considered the questions (here) and Kara Wynn (@wynnsome) compiled words from the community and wrote the final version of our prayer.

LITURGY OF DOUBT

Boundless God,
We gather as seekers,
our lives bound together on this journey by time and space,
We have found certainty no longer within our grasp.
We confess, we don’t want to face our doubts.
Our doubts have shaken us, leaving us afraid.
We confess, we don’t want to face the doubts of others.

Yet, we acknowledge that our doubts have also opened our eyes to see our connectedness with one another.
We are not alone in our doubts.
Free us from our need for certainty.
We are not alone in our struggle to understand.
Free us from our need for control.

We remain hopeful, trusting your spirit to guide us in peace and truth.
Toward a more open heart,
May your Spirit guide us.
Toward a more loving community,
May your Spirit guide us.
Toward a more thoughtful faith,
May your Spirit guide us.
